Steel Pulse
Steel Pulse

by Joanie Cox

Wednesday 10: Steel Pulse
For more than 35 years, Steel Pulse has been grooving audiences with its inspiring lyrics about freedom and equality. The band formed in the slums of England in 1975 and opened for the Clash, the Sex Pistols, the Police and XTC. In 1993, the Rastafarian group was invited to the White House for Bill Clinton’s inauguration party, but we’re going to assume he didn’t inhale. Tonight, they’ll rock Revolution Live with a set of tunes on the African Diaspora, the Ku Klux Klan and, of course, the dangers of dwelling with the baldheads in Babylon. Local reggae act Fourth Dimension will open.
Location: Revolution Live, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale
Time: 9 p.m.
Cost: $25.50

Friday 12: Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat
With the Heat’s amazing overtime win against the defending-champion Los Angeles Lakers this past Thursday, Dwyane Wade demonstrated that he can bring out his best when his team really needs it. The win almost erased bad memories of the Heat’s recent home losses to the so-so Milwaukee Bucks and the execrable Minnesota Timberwolves — almost. But whether the Heat are winning or losing at home, fans always have two advantages — DJ Irie providing a bangin’ soundtrack for the game and hundreds of options for an afterparty. Oh, and our cheerleaders are hotter.
Location: American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $10-$375

Saturday 13: Air
French experimental electronica duo Air has an ethereal, futuristic sound, like something you’d hear in a Parisian cafe in 2028. Hipster director Sofia Coppola commissioned the band to compose an original score for her first film, The Virgin Suicides. She also featured Air on soundtracks for Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin use analog keyboards and minimalist lyrics to achieve a sound that’s, well, as light as air. Special guest AM, a psychedelic pop singer from New Orleans, will open the show.
Location: The Fillmore Miami Beach, 1700 Washington Ave.
Time: 8 p.m.
Cost: $26.50-$66.50
Contact: 305-673-7300 or Livenation.com

Sunday 14: The Eighth Street Jam
There have been many cool songs written about streets: “Moon Over Bourbon Street” by Sting, “Cyprus Avenue” by Van Morrison, “Highway 61 Revisited” by Bob Dylan. Thanks to Pitbull, Little Havana’s most famous street has been immortalized with the booty-shaking hip-pop anthem “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho).” Mr. 305 himself will be making a special appearance at this event, which will feature a live art competition, video-game stations, a Gibson guitar-jam area, beer booths and a food court with Cuban cuisine. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and kick back to a variety of local rock, soul and funk bands, including: DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars, Nil Lara, Suénalo, Locos por Juana, Xperimento, ¡Mayday!, Jacob Jeffries Band, Fusik, Artofficial, Ketchy Shuby and Lanzallamas Monofónica.
Location: The northeast corner of Southwest Eighth Street and 12th Avenue, Miami
Time: 1:30-9 p.m.
Cost: $30
Contact: 877-877-7677 or 8thstreetjam.com

Wednesday 17: 20th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Street Fair
No St. Patrick’s Day party would be complete without an appearance by a U2 cover band. Tonight, Miami-based act UV: the U2 Tribute, will perform the greatest hits by a band that’s clearly one of Ireland’s finest contributions to society — besides Guinness, of course. And yes, the group has members that resemble Bono and the Edge to satisfy the U2 cravings of the truly obsessed. After getting your U2 fix, knock back some Jameson while listening to traditional Irish tunes by Paddy Kelleghan and the Rolling C’s and rock out with the Hard Liquor Band. For more St. Patrick’s Day parties, see this week’s cover story.
Location: Along Salzedo Street and Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables
Time: 5 p.m.
Cost: Free
